✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me a surah from the Quran, and I memorized it and comprehended it. While I was standing in the mosque praying, Hisham b. Hakim was praying beside me. He began reciting that surah in a different reading than the one the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me. I wanted to grab him during the prayer, but I restrained myself until he finished. Then I took hold of his garment and said: "Who taught you this verse?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught it to me." I said: "You lie. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught it to me in a different reading." So I dragged him away. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me, he said to me: "O Umar, let him go." I released his garment and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you taught me a surah from the Quran, and he recites it differently from what you taught me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Recite, O Hisham." He recited, and the Prophet said: "Thus it was revealed." Then he said to me: "Recite, O Umar." I recited, and he said: "Thus it was revealed. The Quran was revealed in seven ahruf, so recite whatever is easy from it."
