✧ We set out with 'Umar ؓ until we reached Marr al-Zahran. 'Umar went into the arak trees to relieve himself, and I waited for him until he came out. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I have wanted to ask you about something for a year, but your awe prevented me from asking you." He said: "Do not do that. If you know that I have knowledge, then ask me." I said: "I ask you about the matter of the two women." He said: "Yes, Hafsah and 'A'ishah. In the time of ignorance we did not consider women of any account, and we did not include them in any of our affairs. When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, brought Islam and sent down about them what He sent down, and gave them a right without including them in any of our affairs, then one day while I was sitting concerning some of my affairs, my wife said to me such and such. I said: 'What is it to you and this? When have you ever entered into our affairs?' She said: 'O Ibn al-Khattab, no one can speak to you, but your daughter speaks to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he remains angry all day.' I said: 'And she does that?' She said: 'Yes.' So I got up and entered upon Hafsah, and I said: 'O Hafsah, do you not fear Allah? You speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he remains angry all day. Woe to you, do not be deceived by the beauty of 'A'ishah and the love of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for her.' Then I also went to Umm Salamah and said the same to her. She said: 'O Ibn al-Khattab, you have entered into everything, even between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his wives.' I had a companion from the Ansar who would attend the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when I was absent, and I would attend when he was absent, and he would inform me and I would inform him. We feared most of all that a king of the kings of Ghassan would attack us. When Allah calmed the matter for us, one day while I was sitting concerning some of my affairs, my companion came and said: 'Abu Hafs! Abu Hafs!' twice. I said: 'Woe to you, what is the matter? Has the Ghassanid come? Has the Ghassanid come?' He said: 'No, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has divorced his wives.' I said: 'May Hafsah's nose be rubbed in the dust, may Hafsah's nose be rubbed in the dust.' I put on my sandals and went to the Prophet ﷺ. There was weeping in every room, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in an upper room, and at the door was a black slave. I said: 'Ask permission for me to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He asked permission, and he admitted me. There he was, sleeping on a mat, with a leather pillow stuffed with palm fiber under his head, and there were acacia pods and tanned hides hanging. I began to tell him what I had said to Hafsah and Umm Salamah. He had sworn to stay away from his wives for a month. When it was the night of the twenty-ninth, he came down to them.
