✧ A people would sit from sunset to nightfall glorifying, saying, “Say such and such, and say such and such.” ʿAbdullāh said, “If they sit, notify me.” When they sat, they came to him, and he set out, entered with them and sat wearing a burnoose. They began their glorification, and ʿAbdullāh uncovered the burnoose from his head and said, “I am ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd.” The people fell silent. He said, “You have brought a dark innovation, or you have surpassed the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ in knowledge.” A man from Banū Tamīm said, “We have not brought a dark innovation, nor have we surpassed the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ in knowledge.” ʿAmr b. ʿUtba b. Farqad said, “I seek forgiveness from God, O Ibn Masʿūd, and I repent to Him.” So he ordered them to disperse. He said: And Ibn Masʿūd saw two circles in the mosque of Kufa, so he stood between them and said, “Which of you was before its companion?” One of them said, “We were.” He said to the other, “Arise and go to it,” and he made them one.
