حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْمُقَدَّمِيِّ ثنا عَثَّامُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ
انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَهْلٍ وَهُوَ صَرِيعٌ وَعَلَيْهِ بَيْضَتُهُ وَمَعَهُ سَيْفٌ جَيِّدٌ وَمَعِي سَيْفٌ رَدِيءٌ فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْقُفُ رَأْسَهُ بِسَيْفِي وَأَذْكُرُ نَقْفًا كَانَ يَنْقُفُ رَأْسِي بِمَكَّةَ حَتَّى ضَعُفَتْ يَدُهُ فَأَخَذْتُ سَيْفَهُ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَتِ الدَّبْرَةُ لَنَا أَوْ عَلَيْنَا أَلَسْتَ رُوَيْعِينَا بِمَكَّةَ؟ فَقَتَلْتُهُ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ قَتَلْتُ أَبَا جَهْلٍ فَقَالَ «اللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ؟» فَاسْتَحْلَفَنِي ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ قَامَ مَعِي إِلَيْهِمْ فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِمْ

✧ I reached Abu Jahl while he was thrown down, wearing his helmet, with a good sword, and with me a bad sword. I began to poke his head with my sword, remembering how he used to poke my head in Makkah, until his hand weakened. I took his sword, and he raised his head and said, “On whose side was the defeat—for us or against us? Are you not our little shepherd boy in Makkah?” I killed him. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “I have killed Abu Jahl.” He said, “By the God besides whom there is no deity?” He made me swear three times, then he stood and went with me to them and supplicated against them.
