✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed by on a very hot day toward Baqi al-Gharqad. The people were walking behind him. When he heard the sound of sandals, that settled in his soul, so he stopped until he made them go ahead of him, lest any pride enter his heart. When he passed by Baqi al-Gharqad, there were two graves in which two men had been buried. The Prophet ﷺ stopped and said, “Whom did you bury here today?” They said, “O Prophet of God, so-and-so.” He said, “They are being punished now and being tested in their graves.” They said, “O Messenger of God, why?” He said, “As for one of them, he used to spread malicious gossip; as for the other, he did not guard himself from urine.” He took a fresh palm stalk, split it, and placed it on the two graves. They said, “O Prophet of God, why did you do that?” He said, “That it may be lightened for them.” They said, “O Prophet of God, until when will they be punished?” He said, “A matter of the unseen known only to God.” He said, “Were it not that you would harbor doubt in your hearts or exaggerate in the report, you would hear what I hear.”
