حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ نَجْدَةَ الْحَوْطِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ثنا مُعَانُ بْنُ رِفَاعَةَ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ يَزِيدَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ
جَلَسْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَّرَنَا وَرَقَّفَنَا فَبَكَى سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ فَأَكْثَرَ الْبُكَاءَ وَقَالَ يَا لَيْتَنِي مُتُّ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «يَا سَعْدُ أَعِنْدِي تَمَنَّ الْمَوْتَ؟» فَرَدَّدَ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا سَعْدُ إِنْ تَكُ خُلِقْتَ لِلْجَنَّةِ فَمَا طَالَ عُمُرُكَ وَحَسُنَ عَمَلُكَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ وَإِنْ تَكُنْ خُلِقْتَ لِلنَّارِ فَبِئْسَتِ الَّتِي الشَّيْءُ تَتَعَجَّلُ إِلَيْهِ»

✧ We sat with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he reminded us and made us tremble, and Sa‘d b. Abi Waqqas wept greatly and said, “Would that I had died.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “O Sa‘d, do you wish for death in my presence?” repeating that three times. Then he said, “O Sa‘d, if you were created for Paradise, then however long your life and however good your deeds, that is better for you; and if you were created for the Fire, then what an evil thing it is to hasten to.”
