- Samurah
✧ A man from the Bedouins came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his ruling on what is forbidden to him and what is lawful for him, regarding his ritual offerings, his livestock, his goats, and the firstborn offspring from the produce of his camels and sheep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Lawful for you are the good things, and forbidden to you are the foul things—unless you are in need of food that is not lawful for you, in which case you may eat from it until you are free of need of it.” At that time a man asked: “What is my state of need, and what is that from which I may eat when I reach it, and what is the sufficiency that will make me free of need of it?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “When you hope for offspring and you can sustain yourself on the meat of your livestock until your offspring come, or you hope for rain that you think will reach you and you can sustain yourself on the meat of your livestock, or you hope for supplies that you will obtain and you can sustain yourself on the meat of your livestock until you reach them. But if you hope for none of that, then feed your family from what appears to you until you are free of need of it.” The Bedouin said: “What is the sufficiency that I may leave when I find it?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “When you satisfy your family with an evening drink of milk, then avoid the food that has been forbidden to you. As for your wealth, it is all made easy for you; there is nothing forbidden in it, except that in the offspring of your camels there is a firstborn, and in the offspring of your sheep there is a firstborn—you nourish them with your livestock until they are of sufficient age, then if you wish you feed their meat to your family, and if you wish you give their meat in charity.” And he commanded him to sacrifice from every pasturing flock of sheep an ‘atirah.
