✧ A man from the Bedouins came to him—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—seeking his ruling about a man: what is lawful for him and what is forbidden for him regarding his property, his sacrificial rites, his livestock, his firstborn offerings, and the offspring of his camels and barren ones. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: “I make lawful for you the good things and forbid you the foul things, except that if you become poor and in need of food, you may eat of it until you are self-sufficient.” Then the man asked him: “What is my poverty that permits me to eat that when I reach it, or my self-sufficiency that makes me dispense with it?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “When you hope for offspring and can reach your offspring with the meat of your livestock, or you hope for rain and it comes in time so that you can reach your offspring with the meat of your livestock, or you hope for profit from its wealth and reach it with the meat of your livestock. But when you hope for none of that, then feed your family what seems good to you until you are self-sufficient from it.” The Bedouin said: “What is my self-sufficiency that I should leave when I find it?” He said: “When you have given your family an evening drink of milk, then avoid what is forbidden to you of food. As for your property, it is all permitted and none of it is forbidden, except that you owe a firstborn from the offspring of your camels and a firstborn from the offspring of your sheep; your livestock may graze until you are self-sufficient, then if you wish feed its meat to your family, or if you wish give its meat in charity.” And he commanded him to offer a tenth from every hundred sheep.
