حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ سَهْلٍ أَبُو عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيُّ ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ثنا الْمُثَنَّى بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَبُو غِفَارٍ ثنا أَبُو تَمِيمَةَ الْهُجَيْمِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي جُرَيٍّ قَالَ
انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ وَالنَّاسُ لَا يَصْدُرُونَ إِلَّا عَنْ قَوْلِهِ قُلْتُ بِاللهِ لِهَذَا الرَّجُلِ مَنْ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا هَذَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ لَا تَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ؛ فَإِنَّهَا تَحِيَّةُ الْمَيِّتِ وَلَكِنْ قُلِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ

✧ I ended up at a man whom the people would not depart except by his word. I said: By Allah, who is this man? They said: This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Do not say 'Upon you be peace,' for it is the greeting of the dead, but say 'Peace be upon you.'" Then he mentioned something similar.
