✧ We were at a large watering place on the main road. Riders would come to us, and we would ask them, 'What does this man say?'—meaning the Prophet ﷺ. They would say, 'He says such and such and commands them with such and such and forbids you from such and such.' I was a boy of six years; I would not hear anything except that it was as if it were written on my heart. The people used to say, 'Wait and see what the people of this man do.' When Makkah was conquered, people sent their delegations to the Messenger of God ﷺ. My father was the delegate of his people, and he came to them and said, 'I have come to you from the Messenger of God. He commands you with such and such and forbids you from such and such. When the prayer is due, let the one among you with the most Qur'an lead you.' They looked and found no one with more Qur'an than I, so they put me forward and I prayed with them. I had a burdah or a shroud-like garment, and an old woman said, 'Will you not cover from us the backside of your reciter?' So a garment was bought from the weaving of Bahrain, and a woman of the tribe cut it into a shirt for me. I never rejoiced at anything after Islam as much as I rejoiced at that shirt.
