حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ
كُنَّا بِحَاضِرٍ يَمُرُّ بِنَا مَنْ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَذَا وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَذَا فَحَفِظْتُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قُرْآنًا كَثِيرًا فَانْطَلَقَ أَبِي وَافِدًا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ فَعَلَّمَهُمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَقَالَ «لِيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَقْرَؤُكُمْ» قَالَ فَكُنْتُ أَقْرَأَهُمْ لِمَا كُنْتُ أَحْفَظُ فَكُنْتُ أَؤُمُّهُمْ وَعَلَيَّ بُرْدَةٌ إِذَا سَجَدْتُ تَكَشَّفَتْ عَنِّي فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَارُوا عَنَّا عَوْرَةَ قَارِئِكُمْ فَاشْتَرَوْا لِي قَمِيصًا عُمَانِيًّا فَمَا فَرِحْتُ بِشَيْءٍ بَعْدَ الْإِسْلَامِ مَا فَرِحْتُ بِهِ فَكُنْتُ أَؤُمُّهُمْ وَأَنَا ابْنُ سَبْعِ سِنِينَ أَوْ ثَمَانِ سِنِينَ

✧ We were at a settlement where those coming from the Prophet ﷺ would pass by us. They would say, 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said such and such,' and 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said such and such,' and I memorized from that a great deal of Qur'an. My father went as a delegate to the Messenger of God ﷺ with a group of his people, and he taught them the prayer. He said, 'Let the one among you who recites best lead you.' I was the best reciter among them because of what I had memorized, so I led them. I had a burdah that, when I prostrated, exposed me. A woman of the people said, 'Conceal from us the private parts of your reciter.' So they bought me an Omani shirt, and I never rejoiced at anything after Islam as much as I rejoiced at it. I led them while I was a boy of seven or eight years.
