✧ We were at a watering place where people passed by. We would ask them, 'What is this matter?' They would say, 'A man claims that he is a prophet, that God sent him, and that God revealed to him such and such.' I began to not hear anything of that without memorizing it, as if it were glued into my chest, until I had gathered from it a great deal of Qur'an. The Arabs used to delay their conversion until the conquest, saying, 'Wait and see; if he prevails over them, then he is truthful and a prophet.' When the news of the conquest came to us, every people hastened to embrace Islam, and my father went with the conversion of the people of our neighborhood. He stayed with the Prophet ﷺ as long as God willed, then returned. When he drew near, we met him. When we saw him, he said, 'I have come to you, by God, from the Messenger of God ﷺ in truth.' Then he said, 'He commands you with such and such and forbids you from such and such, and to pray the prayer of such and such at the time of such and such. When the prayer is due, let one of you call the adhan, and let the one among you with the most Qur'an lead you.' They looked at the people of our neighborhood and found no one with more Qur'an than I, because of what I had memorized from the riders. So they put me forward, and I led them in prayer while I was a boy of six years. I had a burdah that, when I prostrated, rode up and exposed me. A woman of the tribe said, 'Will you not cover from us the backside of your reciter?' So they clothed me in a shirt from the weaving of Bahrain, and I never rejoiced at anything as much as I rejoiced at that shirt.
