✧ It is an old matter; that had already happened. We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ when he was approached and told that something had occurred among the people of Qubāʾ. The Prophet ﷺ went to them to reconcile between them, and he was delayed from the people. Bilāl said to Abū Bakr ؓ, 'Shall I call the iqāmah for the prayer?' He said, 'Whatever you wish.' So he called the iqāmah, and the people put Abū Bakr forward. While he was praying, the Prophet ﷺ came and began making his way through the rows until he stood behind Abū Bakr ؓ. The people began clapping, but Abū Bakr did not turn around during the prayer. When they did it a lot, he turned around and saw the Prophet ﷺ standing behind him. The Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to continue praying as he was, so Abū Bakr stepped back, and the Prophet ﷺ came forward. When he finished, he said to Abū Bakr ؓ, 'What prevented you, when I commanded you, from continuing to pray?' He said, 'It is not fitting for the son of Abū Quḥāfah to lead the Messenger of God ﷺ in prayer.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'What is this clapping in prayer? Glorification is for men and clapping is for women.'
