✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ went out to reconcile between the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf in a matter that had occurred among them, until they threw stones at one another. When the prayer time came, Bilāl gave the call to prayer, but the Messenger of God ﷺ was delayed, so Abū Bakr ؓ stepped forward to lead the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came and began making his way through the rows. When he reached the row next to Abū Bakr, the people began clapping. Abū Bakr was a man who never turned around during the prayer, but when he heard that, he turned and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ gestured to him to remain in place. Abū Bakr ؓ raised his head to the sky in thanks to God, stepped back backwards, and the Messenger of God ﷺ came forward. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned to us and said, “O Abū Bakr, what prevented you from remaining when I gestured to you?” He replied, “God would never see the son of Abū Quḥāfah standing before the Messenger of God ﷺ.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ turned to the people and said, “O people, why, when something happened to you in your prayer, did you start clapping? Clapping is only for women, and glorification (tasbīḥ) is for men. Whoever experiences something in his prayer should say: subḥāna Allāh.”
