✧ 'Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ entered upon Fatimah ؓ, the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, while Hasan and Husayn were crying. He said, "What is making them cry?" She said, "Hunger." He said, "Send a message to your father." So she sent a messenger. The messenger came to him while he had before him leftover dates. He said, "Your daughter says: O Messenger of God, if you have anything, then give it to us, for Hasan and Husayn are crying." The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered the messenger, and he carried it to them. He brought it to Fatimah, and 'Ali entered upon her while it was before her. 'Ali said, "Did he find nothing other than this?" Fatimah ؓ said, "No." 'Ali said, "There is nothing in this that will calm them." So 'Ali ؓ went out and found a dinar in the market. He brought it to Fatimah ؓ and told her, and said, "This is the dinar." Fatimah ؓ said, "Take it to so-and-so the Jew and get us some flour with it." So 'Ali ؓ went out and came to the Jew and bought flour with it. When he finished, the Jew said, "Are you the son-in-law of this man who claims that he is the Messenger of God?" He said, "Yes." The Jew said, "Take your dinar, and the flour is yours." So 'Ali went out until he brought it to Fatimah and told her, and said, "This is the dinar." Fatimah said, "Take it to so-and-so the butcher and get us a dirham's worth of meat. We will send word to the Messenger of God ﷺ so that he may eat with us." So he went and pawned the dinar for a dirham. He brought it, and she kneaded, set up the oven, and baked. She sent for her father, and he came to her. There was a large bowl containing bread, the meat was boiling, and there was flour. She said, "O Messenger of God, I will mention something to you. If you consider it lawful for us, we will eat and you will eat, concerning its matter, such and such." He said, "Eat, in the name of God." So they ate. While they were in their place, there came a boy calling out for the dinar, by God and by Islam. The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered that he be brought, and he questioned him. He said, "My family sent me with a dinar to buy something with it, and it fell from me in the market." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Go to the butcher and tell him that the Messenger of God ﷺ says: Send me the dinar, and your dirham is on me." So he sent it, and the Messenger of God ﷺ gave it to him.
