✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ went out to the Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf to reconcile between them concerning something they had differed about. The Messenger of God ﷺ did not return until the noon prayer was called. Abu Bakr stepped forward to lead the people in prayer and said the takbir. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ entered, and the people saw him and began clapping to alert Abu Bakr to the entrance of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Abu Bakr ؓ did not turn around during his prayer. When he heard the parting of the rows behind him, he knew that the Messenger of God ﷺ had come, so he stepped back toward the row. The Messenger of God ﷺ placed his hand between Abu Bakr's shoulders and pushed him forward to his place, and Abu Bakr remained still for a moment, then he moved back a single pace and entered the row. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw that, he stepped forward and led the prayer until he finished. Then he said the salam and turned to Abu Bakr and said: "What made you do what you did? Why did you not remain when I placed you forward?" He said: "I wanted to, but I did not think it was proper for the son of Abu Quhafah to stand in front of the Messenger of God ﷺ." Then he turned to the people and said: "When something occurs during prayer, you should say subhan Allah, for saying subhan Allah is for men and clapping is for women."
