✧ Zaid bin Haritha bin Sharahil bin Ka'ab bin Abdul Uzza bin Yazid bin Amr al-Qays al-Kalbi, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , martyred on the Day of Mu'tah in the 8th year.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ حَمَّادُ بْنُ أُسَامَةَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَيَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ قَالَ

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُرْدِفِي إِلَى نُصُبٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَابِ فَذَبَحْنَا لَهُ شَاةً ثُمَّ صَنَعْنَاهَا فِي الْإِرَّةِ فَلَمَّا نَضِجَتِ اسْتَخْرَجْنَاها فِي سُفْرَتِنَا ثُمَّ رَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ وَهُوَ مُرْدِفِي فَلَمَّا كُنَّا بِأَعْلَى مَكَّةَ لَقِيَهُ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ فَحَيَّا أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ بِتَحِيَّةِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا لِي أَرَى قَوْمَكَ قَدْ شَنِفُوكَ وكَرَهُوكَ؟» فَقَالَ وَاللهِ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ لَبِغَيْرِ مَا ثَائِرَةٍ كَانَتْ مِنِّي إِلَيْهِمْ إِلَّا أَنِّي أَرَاهُمْ فِي ضَلَالٍ فَخَرَجْتُ أَبْتَغِي هَذَا الدِّينَ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ خَيْبَرَ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ ويُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي أَبْتَغِي بِهِ فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ الشَّامِ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ ويُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي خَرَجْتُ أَبْتَغِي فَقَالَ حَبْرٌ مِنْ أَحْبَارِ الشَّامِ إِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُ عَنْ دَيْنٍ مَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا يَعْبُدُ اللهَ بِهِ إِلَّا شَخْصًا بِالْجَزِيرَةِ فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِالَّذِي خَرَجْتُ لَهُ فَقَالَ لِي إِنَّ كُلَّ مِنْ رَأَيْتَ فِي ضَلَالٍ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُ عَنْ دَيْنِ اللهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَقَدْ خَرَجَ فِي أَرْضِكَ نَبِيٌّ أَوْ هُوَ خَارِجٌ فَارْجِعْ فَصَدِّقْهُ وَآمِنْ بِهِ فَرَجَعْتُ فَلَمْ أَخْتَبِرْ نَبِيًّا بَعْدُ قَالَ فَأَنَاخَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ فَوَضَعَ السُّفْرَةَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ «شَاةٌ ذَبَحْنَاهَا لِنُصُبِ كَذَا كَذَا» فَقَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو إِنَّا لَا نَأْكُلُ شَيْئًا ذُبِحَ لِغَيْرِ اللهِ ثُمَّ تَفَرَّقْنَا قَالَ وَمَاتَ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ قَبْلَ أنْ يُبْعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يُبْعَثُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أُمَّةً وَحْدَهُ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, with me riding behind him, to one of the stone altars. We slaughtered a sheep for him, then we cooked it in a fire pit. When it was done, we took it out into our traveling provision bag. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his she-camel, with me riding behind him. When we reached the upper part of Makkah, he met Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl. One of them greeted the other with the greeting of the Jahiliyyah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Why do I see that your people have come to dislike and hate you?" He said: "By Allah, that from them is not because of any wrong I did to them, except that I see them in error. So I went out seeking this religion until I came to the Jewish scholars of Khaybar. I found them worshiping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said: By Allah, this is not the religion I am seeking. So I went out until I came to the Jewish scholars of Syria. I found them worshiping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said: By Allah, this is not the religion I went out seeking. A rabbi among the Jewish scholars of Syria said: You are asking about a religion we know of no one who worships Allah by it except a certain person in the Peninsula. So I went out until I came to him and told him what I had gone out for. He said to me: Everyone you have seen is in error. You are asking about the religion of Allah and His angels. A prophet has appeared in your land, or is about to appear. Return, believe in him, and follow him. So I returned, and I have not tested any prophet since." He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made his she-camel kneel and placed the provision bag before him. He said: "What is this?" He said: "A sheep we slaughtered for such-and-such a stone altar." Zayd b. ʿAmr said: "We do not eat anything slaughtered for other than Allah." Then we parted. He said: Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl died before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent as a prophet. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "He will be raised on the Day of Resurrection as a nation unto himself."
