✧ While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah in Tihāmah, and the people were hungry, they obtained sheep and camels. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among the last of the people, so they hurried and slaughtered and prepared cooking pots. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and ordered the pots to be overturned. Then he distributed and equated ten sheep with one camel. There was a camel among the people that bolted, and they pursued it but could not catch it. A man shot at it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "These animals have wildness like the wildness of wild beasts. Whatever of them bolts away from you, do with it like this." We said, "We fear, or we hope, to meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives with us. May we slaughter with reeds?" He said, "Whatever makes the blood flow and upon which the name of Allah is mentioned, then eat, except tooth and nail. I will inform you about that: as for the tooth, it is bone; and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians."
