حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا أَبِي وَعَمِّي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ قَالَا ثنا أَبِي ثنا قُرَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ثنا ضِرْغَامَةُ بْنُ عُلَيْبَةَ بْنِ حَرْمَلَةَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ
انْطَلَقْتُ فِي وَفْدِ الْحَيِّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِنَا صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ جَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى وَجْهِ الَّذِي إِلَى جَنْبِي فَمَا أَكَادُ أَنْ أَعْرِفَهُ مِنَ الْغَلَسِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَوْصِنِي قَالَ «اتَّقِ اللهَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ فِي الْقَوْمِ فَسَمِعْتَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ لَكَ مَا يُعْجِبُكَ فَائْتِهِ وَإِنْ سَمِعْتَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ لَكَ مَا تَكْرَهُ فَدَعْهُ»

✧ I set out with the delegation of the tribe to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he led us in the morning prayer. When he had said the salam, I began looking at the face of the man beside me, and I could barely recognize him because of the darkness before dawn. I said, “O Messenger of God, give me a parting instruction.” He said, “Fear God, and if you are among people and hear them saying to you what pleases you, do it; and if you hear them saying to you what you dislike, leave it.”
