حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ وَعُرْوَةِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ وَعنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

أَعْطَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ عَطَاءً فَاسْتَقَلَهُ فَزَادَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيْرٌ؟ قَالَ «الْأُولَى» فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «يَا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ إِنَّ هَذَا خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ وَحُسْنِ أَكْلَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِاسْتِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ وَسُوءِ أَكْلَةٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى» قَالَ وَمِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ؟ قَالَ «وَمِنِّي» قَالَ فَوَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ بَعْدَكَ أَحَدًا شَيْئًا أَبَدًا قَالَ فَلَمْ يَقْبَلْ دِيوَانًا وَلَا عَطَاءً حَتَّى مَاتَ فَكَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ عَلَى حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ أَنِّي أَدْعُوهُ لَحِقِّهِ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَهُوَ يَأْبَى» فَقَالَ إِنِّي وَاللهِ لَا أَرْزَؤُكَ وَلَا غَيْرَكَ شَيْئًا فَمَاتَ حِينَ مَاتَ وَإِنَّهُ لِمِنْ أَكْثَرِ قُرَيْشٍ مَالًا

✧ The Prophet ﷺ gave Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām a gift on the day of Ḥunayn, and he considered it small, so He (the Prophet) increased it. He said, "O Messenger of God, which of your gifts is better?" He said, "The first one." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "O Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām, this is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with a generous soul and good consumption will be blessed in it, and whoever takes it with eager desire and bad consumption will not be blessed in it, and he will be like one who eats but never becomes full. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." He said, "And from you, O Messenger of God?" He said, "And from me." He said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will never ask anyone for anything after you, ever." He said: So he did not accept a register or a gift until he died. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ used to say, "O God, I call You to witness concerning Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām that I invite him to his right from this wealth, and he refuses." He said, "By God, I will not ask you or anyone else for anything." He died when he died, and he was among the wealthiest of Quraysh.
