✧ About his killing of Hamzah, may Allah have mercy on him, how did he kill him? We went toward him, and a man met us as we were asking about him. He said, "He is a man overcome by this wine. If you find him sober, you will find an Arab man who will tell you whatever you want of his story; but if you find him otherwise, leave him." So we came to him and found him in his courtyard. He looked at Ubaydullah b. Adi and said, "Son of Adi b. al-Khiyar?" He said, "Yes." He said, "I have not seen you since your mother al-Sa'diyyah handed you to me in your swaddling. It was only when your feet glimmered that I recognized you." He said, "I said to him, 'We have come to you to tell us about your killing of Hamzah, how you killed him.'" He said, "I was a slave of Jubayr b. Mut'im. His uncle Tu'aymah b. Adi was killed on the day of Badr. He said, 'If you kill Muhammad's uncle in return for my uncle, you are free.' So I went out on the day of Uhud among the people with my spear. My only concern was to be freed. I made Hamzah my target. I headed for him, but Sabba' b. Abd al-Uzza got ahead of me toward him." He said, "I withdrew from him while he was cutting down people with his sword like a dark gray camel. When Sabba' got ahead of me toward him, Hamzah said, 'Come here, O son of the cutter of clitorises.'" He said, "He approached him and struck him, but it was as if he missed him. I hid behind something and shook my spear until I was satisfied with it, then I thrust it and it struck his groin." He said, "He tried to rise but was overcome. I withdrew and returned to the people, then to Makkah, and I was freed. When the Prophet ﷺ conquered Makkah, I went out to al-Ta'if and stayed there. When the people of al-Ta'if agreed to make peace with the Prophet ﷺ, the paths became unclear to me. I began thinking about where to go. While I was in my worry, a man met me and said, 'Why do I see you like this?' I said, 'This man – I have done to his uncle what I did, and I see these people have agreed to make peace with him, so I do not know where to go.' He said, 'By Allah, he does not kill anyone who comes to him and bears witness to his testimony.' So I went out as I was. By Allah, I was not aware until I stood before his head in Madinah. He raised his head and looked at me and said, 'Wahshi?' I said, 'Wahshi,' and I bore witness to his testimony. He said, 'Woe to you, tell me about your killing of Hamzah, how you killed him.' So I told him, by Allah, just as I have told you two. He said, 'Woe to you, hide your face from me.' So I avoided him until Allah, exalted is He, took him. When Abu Bakr ؓ sent the army to al-Yamamah, I went out with the people. I made Musaylimah my target. I charged at him along with a man from the Ansar, and with me was my spear with which I had killed Hamzah. He said, 'I hurled the spear at him, and the Ansari charged at him. Your Lord knows best which of us killed him. If I killed him, then I have killed the best of people and the worst of people.'
