حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنِ الْجَعْدِ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ قَالَ ثنا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ قَالَ
أَعْرَسَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ امْرَأَةً مِنْ نِسَائِهِ يَعْنِي زَيْنَبَ فَجَعَلَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ حَيْسًا ثُمَّ جَعَلَتْهُ فِي تَوْرٍ وَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي جَهْدٍ شَدِيدٍ فَقَالَتْ اذْهَبْ بِهَذَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ واقْرِئْهُ مِنِّي السَّلَامَ وَأَخْبِرْهُ أَنَّ هَذَا مَنَالُهُ قَلِيلٌ فَجِئْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعَثَتْ بِهَذَا إِلَيْكَ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ وَهِيَ تُقْرِئُكَ السَّلَامَ وَتَقُولُ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا مِنَّا لَكَ قَلِيلٌ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ «ضَعْهُ» فَوَضَعْتُهُ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْبَيْتِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «انْطَلِقْ فَادْعُ فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا فَسَمَّى رِجَالًا كَثِيرًا وَمَنْ لَقِيتَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ» فَدَعَوْتُ الَّذِي سَمَّى لِي وَمَنْ لَقِيتُ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَجِئْتُ وَالْبَيْتُ مَلْأَى وَالصُّفَّةُ وَالْحُجْرَةُ فَسَأَلْنَا أَنَسًا كَمْ كَانُوا؟ قَالَ زُهَاءَ ثَلاثُمائَةٍ فَدَعَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالتَّوْرِ فَجِئْتُ بِهِ فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَمَّى وَدَعَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «لِيَتَحَلَّقَ عَشَرَةٌ عَشَرَةٌ وَلْيَأْكُلْ كُلُّ إِنْسَانٍ مِمَّا يَلِيهِ» فَجَعَلُوا يَتَحَلَّقُونَ عَشَرَةً عَشَرَةً وَيُسَمُّونَ وَيَأْكُلُونَ ويَنْهَضُونَ وَكُلَّمَا فَرَغَ قَوْمٌ قَامُوا وَجَاءَ آخَرُونَ يَعْقُبُونَهُمْ حَتَّى أَكَلُوا كُلُّهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «ارْفَعْهُ» فَلَا أَدْرِي هُوَ كَانَ حَيْثُ وَضَعْتُهُ أَكْثَرَ أَمْ حَيْثُ رَفَعَتُهُ وَبَقِيَ فِي بَيْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ طَوَائِفٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ فَأَطَالُوا الْحَدِيثَ فَثَقُلُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ حَيَاءً وَلَا يَشْعُرُونَ أَنَّهُمْ ثَقُلُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَزِيزًا فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَجَعَ ظَنُّوا أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ ثَقُلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَابْتَدَرُوا الْبَابَ فَخَرَجُوا قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَرْخَى السِّتْرَ وَدَخَلَ فَمَكَثَ يَسِيرًا فَأُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْيُ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَقْرَأُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَدْخُلُوا بُيُوتَ النَّبِيِّ إِلَّا أَنْ يُؤَذَنَ لَكُمْ} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَاتِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَأَنَا أَحْدَثُ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِهَذِهِ الْآيَاتِ قَرَأَهُنَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلِيَّ

✧ The Prophet ﷺ held a wedding feast for one of his wives, meaning Zaynab. Umm Sulaym prepared some hays (a dish of dates, clarified butter, and dried curd), then placed it in a stone pot while they were at that time in severe hardship. She said, "Take this to the Messenger of God ﷺ, convey my greetings to him, and tell him that this is a small gift from us." So I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of God, Umm Sulaym sent this to you, and she sends you her greetings and says to you, 'O Messenger of God, this is a small gift from us to you.'" He looked at it and said, "Put it down." I placed it in a corner of the house. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said to me, "Go and invite so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so," naming many men, "and any Muslims you meet." So I invited those he named and any Muslims I met, and I came back while the house, the bench area, and the chamber were full. We asked Anas, "How many were they?" He said, "About three hundred." The Messenger of God ﷺ called me to bring the pot, so I brought it. He placed his hand on it, pronounced the name of God, and supplicated. Then he said, "Let them form circles of ten, and let each person eat from what is in front of him." They formed circles of ten, pronounced the name of God, ate, and left. Whenever one group finished, they departed and others came to take their place, until all of them had eaten. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said to me, "Take it away." I do not know whether it was more when I placed it or when I lifted it. Some groups of people remained in the house of the Messenger of God ﷺ conversing, and they prolonged their talk, which weighed heavily on the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ was the most modest of people, and they were unaware that they were burdening him, for it was difficult for him to tell them. So the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up and left them. When they saw that the Messenger of God ﷺ had returned, they thought they had overstayed, so they rushed to the door and departed. Anas said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came and let down the curtain and entered. He remained for a short while, and revelation came down upon him. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came out reciting: {O you who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless you are given permission}, to the end of the verses. Anas said: I am the most recent of people in connection with these verses; the Messenger of God ﷺ recited them to me.
