حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ قَالَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ حِسَابٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ
خَطَبَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ زَيْنَبَ وَهِيَ بِنْتُ عَمَّتِهِ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُهَا لِزَيْدٍ فَظَنَّتْ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُهَا لِنَفْسِهِ فَلَمَّا عَلِمَتْ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُهَا لِزَيْدٍ أَبَتْ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْرًا أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهُمْ} فَرَضِيَتْ وَسَلَّمَتْ
Translation

✧ The Prophet ﷺ proposed to Zaynab, who was the daughter of his paternal aunt, while he intended her for Zayd. She thought he intended her for himself, but when she learned he intended her for Zayd, she refused. Then God revealed: {It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when God and His Messenger have decreed a matter, to have any choice in their affair}. So she accepted and submitted.
