✧ We traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he struck my mount’s neck with his hand, then said: “Do you have water with you?” I said: Yes, this is a small waterskin of water with me. He said: “Leave it.” Then he dismounted and relieved himself, then came to me and said: “Do you want to relieve yourself?” I said: No. He said: “Then he washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth three times, and sniffed water three times, then washed his face three times. Then he wanted to take out his forearms, but he had on a woolen jubbah that was tight, and he could not take his forearms out of it, so he took his hands out from under the jubbah, then washed his forearms three times each, then wiped his head and wiped over the leather socks. Then we traveled and caught up with the people while ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf was leading them in prayer, and I wanted to alert him to the Prophet’s ﷺ presence, but he prevented me. So we prayed one rakʿah with him, then we made up the second.” The wording is that of the hadith of Hishām b. ʿAmmār.
