✧ He said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit its doer into Paradise. He said: “Excellent, excellent! You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for the one whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the obligatory prayers, pay the obligatory zakāh, fast Ramadān, and perform Hajj to the House. I will tell you the head of this matter, its pillar, and its peak. The head is the testimony that there is no god but Allah, its pillar is prayer, and its peak is jihād. I will tell you the gates of goodness: fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire, and a servant’s prayer in the middle of the night.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited: “Their sides forsake their beds” [Q 32:16]. “I will tell you what is more controlling than all of that.” He shook his mount, and I drew near to the people, then I drew near to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, what is more controlling than all of that? He gestured with his hand to his tongue. I said: The tongue? As if I was careless about it. He said: “May your mother bereave you, O Mu‘ādh b. Jabal! Will people be thrown into the Fire of Hell on their faces except by the harvest of their tongues?”
