✧ A man from Himyar killed a man from the enemy and wanted his spoils, but Khalid b. al-Walid prevented him, as he was the governor over them. Awf came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, and he said: “O Khalid, what prevented you from giving him his spoils?” He said: I considered them too much, O Messenger of Allah. He said: “Give them to him.” Then Khalid passed by Awf, pulled his cloak, and said: Have I fulfilled for you what I mentioned to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? So he became angry and said: “Do not give them to him, O Khalid. Will you not leave my commanders to me? Indeed, your likeness and their likeness is that of a man who bought camels, pastured them, then waited for the time of their watering and brought them to a trough, and they lowered their heads into it and drank its clear water and left its dregs. Its clear water is for you, and its dregs are upon them.”
