✧ I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: My eyesight has become weak, and the floods come between me and the mosque of my people. I wish you would come and pray in my house in a place that I may take as a mosque. The Prophet ﷺ said: "I will do so, if Allah wills." The Prophet ﷺ passed by Abu Bakr and asked him to follow, so he went with him. He asked permission and entered, and while standing he said: "Where do you want me to pray?" I pointed to him where I wanted. He said: Then we detained him for a dish of kharizah that we made for him. The people of the valley, meaning the people of the house, heard of him and came to him until the house was full. A man said: Where is Malik b. al-Dukhshun or Ibn al-Dukhaysh? A man said: That is a hypocrite who does not love Allah or His Messenger. The Prophet ﷺ said again: "Do not say that, for he says there is no god but Allah, seeking thereby the countenance of Allah." He said: O Messenger of Allah, as for us, we see his face and his talk among the hypocrites. The Prophet ﷺ said again: "Do not say that, for he says there is no god but Allah, seeking thereby the countenance of Allah." They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "No one will meet the Day of Resurrection saying there is no god but Allah, seeking thereby the countenance of Allah, except that Allah will forbid him from the Fire." Mahmud said: I narrated this hadith to a group including Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, and he said: I do not think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said what you said. I vowed that if I returned to 'Itban b. Malik, I would ask him. So I returned to him and found him a very old man whose eyesight had gone, and he was the imam of his people. I sat beside him and asked him about this hadith, and he narrated it to me just as he had narrated it the first time. Ma'mar said: When al-Zuhri narrated this hadith, he would say: "Then after that, religious obligations and matters were revealed which we consider to be the final authority, so whoever is able not to change should not change."
