حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ أَبُو عَبْدُ اللهِ الْقَاضِي الرَّامَهُرْمُزِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَرْزُوقٍ ثنا فَهِدُ بْنُ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ بْنِ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ عُمَرَ الْأَزْرَقُ حَدَّثَنِي شُعَيْبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ
خَرَجْتُ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَلَمَّا صِرْتُ بِالضَّرِيَّةِ قَالَ لِي بَعْضُ إِخْوَانِي هَلْ لَكَ فِي رَجُلٍ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ صَاحِبُ الْقُبَّةِ الْمَضْرُوبَةِ فِي مَوْضِعِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَقُلْتُ لِأَصْحَابِي قُومُوا بِنَا إِلَيْهِ فَقُمْنَا فَلَمَّا انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى صَاحِبِ الْقُبَّةِ فَسَلَّمْنَا فَرَدَّ السَّلَامَ فَقَالَ مَنِ الْقَوْمُ؟ قُلْنَا قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ لَكَ صُحْبَةٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ نَعَمْ صَحِبْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَعَدْتُ تَحْتَ مِنْبَرِهِ يَوْمَ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يَقُولُ {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ} فَلَيْسَ لِعَرَبِيٍّ عَلَى عَجَمِيٍّ فَضْلٌ وَلَا لِعَجَمِيٍّ عَلَى عَرَبِيٍّ فَضْلٌ وَلَا لِأَسْوَدَ عَلَى أَبْيَضٍ وَلَا لِأَبْيَضَ عَلَى أَسْوَدَ فَضْلٌ إِلَّا بِالتَّقْوَى يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ لَا تَجِيئُونِي بِالدُّنْيَا تَحْمِلُونَهَا عَلَى أَعْنَاقِكُمْ وَيَجِيءُ النَّاسُ بِالْآخِرَةِ فَإِنِّي لَا أُغْنِي عَنْكُمْ مِنَ اللهِ شَيْئًا قُلْنَا مَا نُسَمِّيكَ اسْمُكَ؟ قَالَ أَنَا الْعَدَّاءُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَامِرٍ فَارِسُ الضَّحْيَاءِ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ

✧ I set out for Makkah. When I reached al-Ḍariyyah, one of my companions said to me, “Would you like to meet a man who was a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “The owner of the tent pitched in such-and-such a place.” I said to my companions, “Let us go to him.” We went, and when we reached the owner of the tent, we greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said, “Who are the people?” We said, “A group from the people of Basrah. We have heard that you were a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said, “Yes, I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat beneath his pulpit on the day of the Farewell Pilgrimage. He ascended the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: Allah ﷻ says, {O mankind, indeed We created you from a male and a female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.} There is no virtue of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab, nor of a black over a white, nor of a white over a black, except by piety. O company of Quraysh, do not come to me with the world carrying it on your necks while the people come with the Hereafter, for I cannot avail you against Allah in anything.” We said, “What should we call you? What is your name?” He said, “I am al-ʿAddāʾ b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir, the rider of al-Ḍaḥyāʾ in the Jāhiliyyah.”
