✧ He was among those who spoke to the Prophet ﷺ on the day of the Hawazin captives. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Your kinsmen, your root, and all the sucklings.” And he said: “For this day we saved you, and they are your mothers, your sisters, and your aunts.” The Messenger of God ﷺ spoke to his Companions, so they returned their captives to them, except for two men. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Go and give them a choice.” One of them said: “I will leave him,” and the other said: “I will not leave him.” When the latter turned away, the Prophet ﷺ said: “His arrow has struck well.” He would pass by a virgin girl or a boy and leave him, until he passed by an old woman. Then he said: “I will take this one, for she is a living mother, and they will ransom her from me with whatever they are able.” Atiyyah exclaimed: “Take her, O Messenger of God! Her mouth is not cool, nor is her breast full, nor is her visitor content. She is an old woman, O Messenger of God, a freeborn captive with no one to care for her.” When he saw that no one was interested in her, he left her.
