✧ The cavalry of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to ʿAqrab. They took my aunt and some people. When they brought them to the Prophet ﷺ, they lined them up before him. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the visitors have gone far, the children have been cut off, and I am an old woman with no service to offer. Show favor to me, may Allah ﷻ show favor to you.' He said: 'Who is your visitor?' She said: 'ʿAdī b. Ḥātim.' He said: 'The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger?' She said: 'So show favor to me.' When he returned, and a man beside him, whom we think was ʿAlī, said: 'Ask him for a mount.' She said: 'I asked him, and he ordered a female donkey.' I said: 'You have done something your father would not have done.' She said: 'Go to him, whether desirous or fearful. So-and-so came to him and obtained from him, and so-and-so came to him and obtained from him.' So I went to him, and there was with him a woman and children or a child. He mentioned their closeness to the Prophet ﷺ, and I realized that he was not a king like Kisrā and Caesar. He said: 'O ʿAdī, what makes you flee from it being said "There is no god but Allah"? Is there any god besides Allah? What makes you flee from it being said "Allah is greater"? Is there anything greater than Allah?' So I became Muslim, and I saw his face rejoice. He said: 'Those who have incurred anger are the Jews, and those who are astray are the Christians.' Then some people came to him and asked him. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: 'Now then, you people should give from your surplus. Let a man give a ṣāʿ, part of a ṣāʿ, a handful.' Shuʿbah said: 'Most of my knowledge is that he said: "A date, half a date. One of you will meet Allah, and He will say: "Did I not make you hearing and seeing? Did I not give you wealth and children? What have you sent ahead?" He will look in front of him, behind him, to his right, and to his left, and will not find anything, so he will not shield himself from the Fire except with his face. So shield yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date. If you do not find that, then with a good word. I do not fear poverty for you. Allah will surely support you and give you, or open for you, until a woman travels in a litter between al-Ḥīrah and Yathrib, and the greatest fear for her litter is theft.'
