✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting in the mosque. The people said: 'This is ʿAdī b. Ḥātim,' and I was a Christian. I came without a safe-conduct or a letter. When I was brought to him, he took my hand. Before that he had said: 'I hope that Allah will place his hand in my hand.' He stood with me, and a woman met him with a boy. They said: 'We have a need for you.' He stood with her until he fulfilled her need, then took my hand until he came to his house. A cushion was placed for him, and he sat on it, and I sat before him. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: 'You are only deluded because it is said "There is no god but Allah." Do you know of any god besides Allah?' Then he spoke for a while, then said: 'Are you only deluded or harmed because it is said "Allah is greater"? Do you know anything greater than Allah?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'The Jews have incurred anger, and the Christians are astray.' I said: 'Then I am a ḥanīf, a Muslim.' I saw his face brighten with joy. Then he commanded me, and I stayed with a man of the Anṣār. I would come to him at the two ends of the day. While I was with him one evening, some people came to him in woolen clothes of these striped ones. He prayed, then stood and urged them, then said: 'With a ṣāʿ, or half a ṣāʿ, or half of that, or even with part of a handful, one of you can protect his face from the heat of Hell or the Fire. Even with half a date. For one of you will meet Allah, and He will say to him what I say to you: "Did I not give you hearing and sight?" He will say: "Yes." He will say: "Did I not give you wealth and children?" He will say: "Yes." He will say: "Where is what you sent ahead for yourself?" He will look in front of him, behind him, to his right, and to his left, and will not find anything with which to protect his face. So let one of you protect his face from the Fire, even with half a date. If he does not find that, then with a good word. I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah ﷻ will support you and give you, until a woman travels in a litter between Yathrib and al-Ḥīrah, and the greatest fear for her mount is theft.' I began saying to myself: 'Where are the thieves of Ṭayyiʾ?'
