✧ I heard ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar say: While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with ʿAʾishah behind him, Abu Bakr asked permission and entered. Then ʿUmar asked permission and entered. Then Saʿd b. Malik entered. Then ʿUthman b. ʿAffan asked permission while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was talking with his knee uncovered. He pulled his garment over his knee when ʿUthman asked permission, and said to his wife, “Move back.” They conversed for a while, then left. ʿAʾishah said, “O Prophet of Allah, my father and his companions entered and you did not adjust your garment over your knee, nor did you move me back from you.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “O ʿAʾishah, should I not feel shy before a man before whom the angels feel shy? By the One in whose hand is the soul of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the angels feel shy of ʿUthman just as they feel shy of Allah and His Messenger. Had he entered while you were close to me, he would not have spoken or raised his head until you left.”
