✧ He was a prophet who sent his brother and said: “Go to Makkah until you hear from him and bring me news of him.” His brother went to Makkah and heard news of the Prophet ﷺ, then returned to Abu Dharr and informed him that he enjoins good, forbids evil, and enjoins noble character. He said: “You have not satisfied me.” Then he took a waterskin containing water and a leather bucket, and set out until he came to Makkah. He was afraid to ask anyone about anything, and he did not meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until night fell. When it became dark, ʿAli b. Abi Talib passed by him and said: “Who is the man?” He said: “A man from Ghifar.” He said: “Come to your lodging,” and took him to his lodging, neither of them asking the other about anything. When morning came, he went out but did not meet him, so he stood aside in the mosque. ʿAli b. Abi Talib passed by him and said: “Is it not time for the man to know his lodging?” He took him along, neither of them asking the other about anything. On the third day, Abu Dharr made ʿAli promise that if he told him what he wanted, he would keep it secret and conceal it from others. He did so, and said: “It has reached me that a man has appeared in Makkah claiming to be a prophet. I sent my brother, but he did not bring me what would satisfy me, so I came myself to learn his news.” ʿAli b. Abi Talib said: “Then follow my tracks, for if I see something I fear for you, I will stand as if to urinate and return to you. If I see nothing, then follow my tracks.” So ʿAli went out, and Abu Dharr followed his tracks until they entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Dharr told him his news and heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then submitted. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, command me with your command.” He said: “Return to your people until my news reaches you.” He said: “No, by Allah, I will not return until I proclaim Islam openly.” He went out to the mosque and called out with the prayer, saying: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” The polytheists said: “The man has turned Sabian! The man has turned Sabian!” and they beat him until he fell. Al-ʿAbbas b. ʿAbd al-Muttalib passed by him, leaned over him, then said: “O people of Quraysh, you are merchants and your route passes by Ghifar. Do you want us to cut off the route from you?” So they left him alone. On the second day, he repeated the same words, and they beat him. Al-ʿAbbas passed by him and said the same to them, so they left him alone. This was the beginning of Islam for Abu Dharr ؓ.
