✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was never given victory in any battle like he was at Uḥud. That was denied, so Ibn ʿAbbās said: Between me and the one who denies it is the Book of God. God says: {And God did indeed fulfil His promise to you when you were slaying them by His permission}. Ibn ʿAbbās said: al-ḥass means killing. {Until when you lost courage} up to His saying: {And God has pardoned you, and God is bountiful to the believers}. He meant by this the archers. The Prophet ﷺ stationed them at a lookout and said: "Protect our backs. If you see us being killed, do not come to our aid; and if you see us gaining spoils, do not share with us." When God granted the Prophet ﷺ spoils and allowed him the camp of the polytheists, the archers all turned away and entered the camp to plunder, while the ranks of the Prophet's companions had become interlocked — and he interlaced his right and left fingers. When the archers abandoned that position where they had been, the cavalry entered from that point upon the Prophet's companions, and they struck one another, and many Muslims were killed. From the beginning of the day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions had killed seven or nine of the standard-bearers of the polytheists. The Muslims made a retreat toward the mountain, but did not reach the place people call al-Ghār; they were below al-Mihrās. Satan cried out, "Muḥammad has been killed!" and we had no doubt it was true. We remained so, not doubting he had been killed, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared between the two mountain passes. I recognized him by the way he swayed when he walked. We rejoiced as if nothing had befallen us. He climbed toward us saying: "God's anger is intense against a people who bloodied the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." And another time he said: "O God, it is not for them to overcome us until they reach us." He stayed for a while, and then Abu Sufyān shouted from the foot of the mountain: "Exalted be Hubal!" — meaning his gods. "Where is Ibn Abī Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abī Quḥāfah? Where is Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb?" ʿUmar said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not answer him?" He said: "Yes." When he said, "Exalted be Hubal," ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: "God is more exalted and more majestic." Abu Sufyān said: "O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, you have done well." Then he repeated the same: "Where is Ibn Abī Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abī Quḥāfah? Where is Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb?" ʿUmar said: "Here is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, here is Abu Bakr, and here am I, ʿUmar." Abu Sufyān said: "A day for the day of Badr. Days alternate, and war is a matter of give and take." ʿUmar said: "No, they are not equal. Our slain are in Paradise and your slain are in the Fire." He said: "You claim that. We would then be disappointed and losers." Then Abu Sufyān said: "You will find mutilation among your slain, and that was not by the decision of our leaders." Then tribal pride overtook him, and he said: "Indeed it happened, but we did not disapprove of it."
