حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُنَيْدِ بْنِ دَاوُدَ ثنا أَبِي ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ أَنَّ حُمَيْدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ اذْهَبْ يَا أَبَا رَافِعٍ لِبَوَّابِهِ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقِيلَ لَهُ §لَئِنْ كَانَ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنَّا فَرِحَ بِمَا أُوتِيَ وَأَحَبَّ
أَنْ يُحْمَدَ بِمَا يَفْعَلُ مُعَذَّبًا لَنُعَذَّبَنَّ أَجْمَعِينَ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ مَا لَكُمْ وَلِهَذِهِ؛ إِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ هَذَا فِي أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ ثُمَّ تَلَا ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ {وَإِذْ أَخَذَ اللهُ مِيثَاقَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا وَيُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يُحْمَدُوا بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا} وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ سَأَلَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَحَسَدُوهُ فَكَتَمُوهُ وَأَخْبَرُوهُ بِغَيْرِهِ فَفَرِحُوا وَخَرَجُوا وَقَدْ أَرَوْهُ أَنَّهُمْ أَخْبَرُوهُ بِمَا سَأَلَهُمْ عَنْهُ وَاسْتَحْمَدُوا إِلَيْهِ بِذَلِكَ وَفَرِحُوا بِمَا أَتَوْا مِنْ كِتْمَانِهِمْ إِيَّاهُ عَمَّا سَأَلَهُمْ

✧...to be praised for what he does — as one being punished? We shall surely be punished, all together. Ibn ʿAbbās said: What is the matter with you and this? It was revealed about the People of the Book. Then Ibn ʿAbbās recited: {And when God took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture: 'You shall make it clear to the people'} up to His saying: {Think not that those who rejoice in what they have done and love to be praised for what they have not done}. And Ibn ʿAbbās said: The Prophet ﷺ asked them about something, but they envied him and concealed it, telling him something else. They rejoiced and went out having made him think they had told him what he asked about, and they sought praise from him for that, rejoicing in what they had done in concealing from him what he asked about.
