✧ I passed by the Messenger of God ﷺ while I was wearing white clothes, and he was confiding privately with Diḥya b. Khalīfa al-Kalbī, who was Gabriel ﷺ, and I did not know. I did not greet them. Gabriel said, “O Muḥammad, who is this?” He said, “This is my cousin, this is Ibn ʿAbbās.” He said, “How intensely white his clothes are! Indeed, his descendants will prevail after him. If he had greeted us, we would have returned his greeting.” When I returned, the Messenger of God ﷺ said to me, “O Ibn ʿAbbās, what prevented you from greeting?” I said, “May my father and mother be your ransom, I saw you confiding privately with Diḥya b. Khalīfa, and I disliked interrupting your private conversation.” He said, “And you saw him?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Indeed, your sight will go and will be restored to you at your death.” ʿIkrima said: When Ibn ʿAbbās died and was placed on his bier, a bird of intense radiance came and entered into his shrouds. They wanted to unfold his shrouds, but ʿIkrima said, “What are you doing? This is the glad tidings of the Messenger of God ﷺ that he told him.” When he was placed in his grave, he was met with words that were heard by those at the edge of his grave: {O tranquil soul, return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing, and enter among My servants and enter My garden}.
