✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Who will guard us tonight?” Abdullah said: I said, “I will, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “You will sleep.” Then he repeated: “Who will guard us tonight?” I said, “I will,” until he repeated it three times, and I said, “I will, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Then you.” So I guarded them until near dawn, when the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ overtook me, “You will sleep,” and I slept. Nothing woke us except the heat of the sun on our backs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and performed ablution as he used to do and prayed the two rak‘ahs of Fajr, then led us in the Fajr prayer. When he finished, he said: “If Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had willed that you not sleep through it, you would not have slept, but He willed it to be—or he said, it will be—for those after you. So this is for anyone who sleeps or forgets.” Then the Prophet’s she-camel and the people’s camels scattered. The people went out searching for them and brought back their camels except the Prophet’s she-camel. Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “Take this direction.” I took the direction he indicated and found its halter tangled around a tree. By Allah, nothing could have untied it except a hand. He said: I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I found its halter tangled around a tree, nothing could have untied it except a hand. He said: And upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was revealed: “Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory” [48:1].
