حَدَّثَنَا أَسْلَمُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ الْبُرْجُلَانِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ
كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَيُسَلِّمُ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَيُومِئُ أَحَدُنَا لِصَاحِبِهِ بِالْحَاجَةِ فَجِئْتُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَقَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ»

✧ We used to talk during the prayer; some of us would greet others, and one of us would gesture to his companion about a need. One day I came while the Messenger of God ﷺ was praying and greeted him, but he did not respond to me. I was seized by thoughts of what had happened before and what had newly occurred. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished, he said: 'Indeed, God brings about in His command whatever He wills, and He has now brought about that you should not talk during the prayer.'
