حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ قَالَ قَالَ
ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَيَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا فَلَمَّا جِئْتُ مِنْ أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا فَأَخَذَنِي مَا تَقَدَّمَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ ثُمَّ انْتَظَرْتُهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ يُحَدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَإِنَّهُ قَضَى أَوْ قَالَ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

✧ Ibn Masʿūd ؓ said: 'We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prayer, and he would respond to us. But when I came from the land of Abyssinia, I greeted him and he did not respond to us. I was seized by thoughts of what had happened before and what would come after. Then I waited for him, and when he finished his prayer, I mentioned that to him. He said: "Indeed, God brings about in His command whatever He wills, and He has decreed—or he said: He has brought about—that you should not talk during the prayer."
