✧ Did you not know that the forbearing man was about to be a prophet! Then he turned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'By al-Lat and al-'Uzza, I will not believe in you!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said to him, 'O Bedouin, what made you say what you said? You spoke untruth and did not honour my gathering.' He said, 'And you speak to me belittling the Messenger of Allah. By al-Lat and al-'Uzza, I will not believe in you unless this lizard believes in you!' He took out a lizard from his sleeve and threw it before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'If this lizard believes in you, I will believe in you!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O lizard!' The lizard spoke in clear Arabic that all the people understood: 'At your service and at your pleasure, O Messenger of the Lord of the worlds!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to it, 'Whom do you worship?' It said, 'The One whose Throne is in the heaven, whose authority is in the earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire.' He said, 'Who am I, O lizard?' It said, 'You are the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds and the Seal of the Prophets. He who believes in you has succeeded, and he who denies you has failed.' The Bedouin said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are truly the Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I came to you while there was no one on the face of the earth more hateful to me than you, and by Allah, at this moment you are dearer to me than myself and my child. My hair, my skin, my inner self, my secret and my open self have all believed in you!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Praise be to Allah who has guided you to this religion, which rises and is not risen above. Allah does not accept it except with prayer, and He does not accept prayer except with Qur'an.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him al-hamdu lillah and Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I have never heard in simple speech or poetry anything more beautiful than this!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'This is the speech of the Lord of the worlds, and it is not poetry. If you recite Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad once, it is as if you have recited a third of the Qur'an. If you recite it twice, it is as if you have recited two thirds of the Qur'an. If you recite it three times, it is as if you have recited the entire Qur'an.' The Bedouin said, 'What an excellent god our God is; He accepts the easy and gives greatly!' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Give to the Bedouin!' So they gave him until they made him overwhelmed. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I wish to give him a she-camel to draw near to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, one that is less than a Bukhti camel but above an ordinary Bedouin camel, and it is pregnant.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'You have described what you will give. Shall I describe for you what Allah will give you in return?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'You will have a she-camel of pearl, hollow, its legs of green chrysolite, its neck of yellow chrysolite, upon it a howdah, and on the howdah fine silk and brocade. It will pass with you over the Sirat like a flash of lightning.' The Bedouin left from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and met a thousand Bedouins on a thousand mounts with a thousand spears and a thousand swords. He said to them, 'Where are you heading?' They said, 'We are going to fight this one who lies and claims to be a prophet!' The Bedouin said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah!' They said, 'Have you apostatized?' He said, 'I have not apostatized!' He told them this account, and they all said, 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah!' This reached the Prophet ﷺ, and he met them wrapped in a cloak. They dismounted on their knees, kissing what they had turned away from, and saying, 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah!' They said, 'Command us with your command, O Messenger of Allah!' He said, 'Enter under the banner of Khalid b. al-Walid.' He said: 'There is no group from the Arabs, a thousand all together, who believed except the Banu Sulaym.' - None narrated it from Dawud b. Abi Hind with this full text except Kahmas, and none from Kahmas except Mu'tamir. Muhammad b. 'Abd al-A'la was alone in narrating it.
