  2. Kaʿb b. ʿAlqamah

✧ Ghurafa b. al-Harith—who was a Companion and fought with ʿIkrima b. Abī Jahl in Yemen during the Ridda—a Christian from the people of Miṣr called al-Mandaqūn passed by him, and he invited him to Islam. The Christian mentioned the Prophet ﷺ and reviled him. That was brought to ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, so he sent for them and said: “We have given them a covenant.” Ghurafa said: “God forbid that covenants and pacts should be on condition that they revile us regarding God and His Messenger. We only gave them [the covenant] on condition that they be left alone with their churches, so they may say in them whatever they wish, and that we not burden them with what they cannot bear, and that we fight on their behalf, and that we leave them to their own judgments—unless they come to us so that we judge between them by what God has revealed.” ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said: “You have spoken the truth.”
