✧ My brother Moses ﷺ said: 'O Lord, show me the one You showed me in the ship.' God revealed to him: 'O Moses, you will see him.' It was only a short time before al-Khidr came to him, fragrant of scent, with beautifully white garments. He said: 'Peace be upon you, O Moses son of Imran. Your Lord sends you greetings of peace and the mercy of God.' Moses said: 'He is the Peace, from Him is peace, and to Him returns peace. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, whose blessings I cannot count, and I am unable to thank Him except by His help.' Then Moses said: 'I want you to give me advice that God will benefit me with after you.' Al-Khidr said: 'O seeker of knowledge, the speaker is less weary than the listener, so do not bore your companions when you speak to them. Know that your heart is a vessel, so look at what you fill your vessel with. Turn away from this world and cast it behind you, for it is not a home for you, nor do you have a place of settlement in it. It is made as a provision for the servants, so that they may take from it provisions for the Hereafter. O Moses, accustom yourself to patience and you will attain wisdom. Clothe your heart with piety and you will obtain knowledge. Train yourself to patience and you will be free from sin. O Moses, devote yourself to knowledge if you want it, for knowledge is only for those who devote themselves to it. Do not be excessively talkative or verbose, for much talk disgraces scholars and exposes the faults of the foolish. But upon you is moderation, for that is part of success and right guidance. Turn away from the ignorant and forbear with the foolish, for that is the merit of the wise and the adornment of scholars. If an ignorant person insults you, remain silent before him with a peaceful attitude and avoid him with prudence, for what remains of his ignorance toward you and his insults to you is greater and more severe. O son of Imran, do you not see that you have been given only a little knowledge? For reckless plunging and straying come from impetuosity and affectation. O son of Imran, do not open a door whose closing you do not know, and do not close a door whose opening you do not know. O son of Imran, one whose desire for this world never ends and whose longing for it never ceases—how can he be a worshipper? One who belittles his own state and accuses God of what He has decreed for him—how can he be an ascetic? Can one whose passion has overcome him refrain from desires? Will knowledge benefit him while ignorance encompasses him? For his journey is to his Hereafter while he is turning toward his world. O Moses, learn what you learn in order to act upon it, and do not learn it merely to talk about it, lest it become a burden upon you and its light be for someone else. O Moses son of Imran, make asceticism and piety your clothing, and knowledge and remembrance your speech. Increase in good deeds, for you will certainly encounter evil deeds. Shake your heart with fear, for that pleases your Lord. Do good, for you must inevitably do something besides it. You have been admonished if you remember.' Then al-Khidr departed, and Moses remained sad and distressed.
