✧ Najdah wrote to Ibn 'Abbas asking him about some matters. I witnessed Ibn 'Abbas when he read the letter and when he wrote his reply. Ibn 'Abbas said: Were it not that I might turn him away from an error he has fallen into, I would not write to him, nor would it be a favor to him. So he wrote to him: You asked about the share of the near relatives whose matter God has mentioned. We used to consider that we were the relatives of the Messenger of God ﷺ, but our people refused that to us. You asked about the orphan: when does his orphanhood end? When he reaches marriageable age and sound judgment is seen in him, his property is handed over to him and his orphanhood ends. You asked whether the Messenger of God ﷺ killed any of the children of the polytheists. The Messenger of God ﷺ did not kill any of them. You asked whether a woman and a slave have a fixed share when they are present. They do not have a fixed share, except that they may be given something from the spoils of the people.
