✧ "The Children of Israel appointed a caliph over themselves. He stood praying in the moonlight on the roof of the Temple. He recalled things he had done, so he lowered himself by a rope. In the morning the rope was hanging from the mosque, and he had gone. He set off until he came to a people on the seashore. He found them making bricks. He asked them how they were paid for these bricks. They told him, so he worked with them, eating from the labor of his own hands. When prayer time came, he performed ablution and prayed. That worker was reported to their governor: 'There is among us a man who does such and such.' So the governor sent for him, but he refused to come. Then the governor came himself, riding on his mount. When the man saw him, he fled. The governor pursued him, but the man outran him. The man said: 'Wait for me so I can say a word to you.' He stopped and spoke to him, telling him that he had been a king and that he had fled out of fear for his sin. The governor said: 'I will join you.' So he worshiped God at the sands of Egypt." Abdullah b. Mas'ud said: "If I were in Egypt, I would show you the place, by the description the Messenger of God ﷺ gave us."
