✧ Anas b. Mālik arrived in Madinah, and ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz sent me, saying: 'Ask him about the ḥadīth that al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf reported concerning a group who rebelled in the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so he blinded two, amputated two, and crucified two.' Anas said: 'Those people had professed Islam and settled in Madinah, then they left it out of aversion to Islam, joined the polytheists, raided the livestock of Madinah, and drove it off. The Prophet ﷺ was informed of them, so he sent in pursuit of them and seized this group.' He said: 'ʿUmar sent back to him, saying: "Would that you had not reported this ḥadīth to al-Ḥajjāj. These people turned away from Islam, joined the polytheists, and raided the livestock of Madinah, but al-Ḥajjāj considered this lawful against those who did not intend to leave Islam or join the polytheists."' ʿUmar said: 'And ask him: Did the Prophet ﷺ dye his hair? For we see here some of his hair as though it has been colored.' Anas said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ was blessed with black hair. If I were to count what I saw of white hairs on his head and beard, I would not count fifteen. I do not think this hair you find has been colored except from the perfume that was put in the hair of the Messenger of God ﷺ.'
