✧ There were two brothers at the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and one of them was superior to the other. The superior one died, then the other lived forty nights after him and then died. The virtue of the first over the last was mentioned to the Messenger of God ﷺ, so he said: 'Did he not pray?' They said: 'Yes.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'And he was not objectionable?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'And what will tell you how far his prayer reached?' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'The likeness of prayers is like a deep, sweet river at a man's door into which he plunges five times every day. What do you think that leaves of his filth? You do not know what his prayer accomplished.'
