حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَطِيَّةَ الْعَوْفِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ حَدَّثَهُ
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ: بَعَثَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَخَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ، وَقَالَ: إِنْ كَانَ قِتَالٌ فَعَلِيٌّ عَلَيْكُمْ، وَأَنَّهُ فُتِحَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَأَصَابُوا سَبْيًا، فَأَخَذَ عَلِيٌّ جَارِيَةً حَسْنَاءَ لِيَبْعَثَ بِهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَبَى عَلَيْهِ خَالِدٌ، وَقَالَ: أَنَا أَبْعَثُ بِهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَلَمَّا مَنَعَهُ انْطَلَقَ خَالِدٌ، فَبَعَثَ بُرَيْدَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ. قَالَ بُرَيْدَةُ: فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَغْسِلُ رَأْسَهُ، فَقُلْتُ فِي عَلِيٍّ عِنْدَهُ، وَكُنَّا إِذَا قَعَدْنَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَمْ نَرْفَعْ أَبْصَارَنَا إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَهْ يَا بُرَيْدَةُ، فَرَفَعْتُ رَأْسِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا وَجْهُهُ مُتَغَيِّرٌ، فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ: أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ غَضَبِ اللهِ، وَغَضَبِ رَسُولِ اللهِ. قَالَ بُرَيْدَةُ: وَاللهِ لَا أَبْغَضُهُ أَبَدًا بَعْدَ الَّذِي رَأَيْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ.

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and Khālid b. al-Walīd, and he said: “If there is fighting, then ʿAlī is in command over you.” Then victory was granted to them, and they captured prisoners. ʿAlī took a beautiful slave girl to send to the Messenger of God ﷺ, but Khālid objected and said, “I will send her to the Messenger of God ﷺ.” When Khālid prevented him, he left and sent Buraydah to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Buraydah said: I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was washing his head, and I spoke ill of ʿAlī in his presence. When we sat before the Messenger of God ﷺ, we did not raise our eyes to him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Enough, O Buraydah.” So I raised my head toward the Messenger of God ﷺ and saw his face had changed color. When I saw that, I said: I seek refuge in God from the anger of God and the anger of the Messenger of God. Buraydah said: By God, I will never hate him after what I saw from the Messenger of God ﷺ.
