✧ Umar b. al-Khattab said to Ali b. Abi Talib: O Abu al-Hasan, sometimes you were present when we were absent, and sometimes we were present when you were absent. There are three things I will ask you about; do you have knowledge of them? Ali said: What are they? He said: A man loves a man though he has seen no good from him, and a man hates a man though he has seen no evil from him. He said: Yes. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: The spirits are in the air, mustered troops; they meet and smell one another. Those that recognize each other come together, and those that fail to recognize each other separate. Umar said: One. And the man who relates a hadith then forgets it, then remembers it. Ali said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: There is no heart that does not have a cloud like the cloud of the moon. While the moon is shining, a cloud passes over it and it darkens; when it clears, it shines again. While a man is relating, a cloud passes over him and he forgets; when it clears, he remembers. Umar said: Two. And he said: A man sees a dream, some of which come true and some of which prove false. He said: Yes. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: No male or female servant sleeps and falls into deep sleep except that his spirit is taken up to the Throne. The dream that does not wake except at the Throne is the one that comes true, and the one that wakes before reaching the Throne is the dream that proves false. Umar said: Three things I was seeking; praise be to God who let me find them before death.
