✧ While I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ, a man of handsome appearance and pleasant fragrance came and greeted. He said: “O Prophet of God, may I come close to you?” He said: “Come close.” He came close until he almost touched him, then said: “O Messenger of God, tell me what is Islam?” He said: “You testify that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God, establish the prayer, give the zakah, and fast Ramaḍān.” He said: “Then if I do this, I am a Muslim?” He said: “Yes.” The man said: “You have spoken the truth.” He said: “O Prophet of God, tell me what is faith (al-īmān)?” He said: “That you believe in God, His angels, His Book, His messengers, and the resurrection, and you believe in the divine decree, all of it, its good and its evil.” He said: “Then if I do that, I am a believer?” He said: “Yes.” The man said: “You have spoken the truth.” He said: “What is spiritual excellence (al-iḥsān)?” He said: “You fear God as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, He sees you, and you love for people what you love for yourself.” He said: “Then if I do that, I am a doer of excellence?” He said: “Yes.” The man said: “You have spoken the truth.” The man said: “Then when is the Hour?” He said: “The one questioned knows no more about it than the questioner, but it has signs and indications.” He said: “What are they?” He said: “When you see the barefoot, naked, destitute become kings of the people, and you see shepherds of sheep competing in tall buildings, and the slave woman gives birth to her mistress.” The man said: “You have spoken the truth.” Then he departed. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Bring the man to me.” ‘Umar said: “We sought him but could not find him.” Then the Prophet ﷺ said: “God is greatest. Gabriel wanted to teach you your religion.”
