✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and Khālid b. al-Walīd, each alone and together. He said: When you are together, ʿAlī is in charge. He said: They took the right and left. ʿAlī went far and captured spoils, and he took a slave girl from the spoils. Buraydah said: I was among the people most hateful of ʿAlī. A man came to Khālid b. al-Walīd and mentioned that he had taken a slave girl from the fifth. He said: What is this? Then another came, then another, then reports followed on that. Khālid called me and said: O Buraydah, you know what has been done. Go with this letter of mine to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He wrote to him, so I went with his letter until I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He took the letter with his left hand — and he was as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: he neither read nor wrote. I used to lower my head when speaking until I finished what I needed; so I lowered my head and spoke, and I reviled ʿAlī until I was done. Then I raised my head and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ angry with an anger I had never seen from him except on the day of Qurayẓah and al-Naḍīr. He looked at me and said: O Buraydah, love ʿAlī, for he only does what he is commanded. He said: I stood up, and there was no one among the people more beloved to me than him.
